One week until Christmas, and from now ’til then, it’s open season on cheesy Christmas flicks and holiday specials. So, once again, This Guy is watching one great Christmas movie a day from here to the big day. Be sure to check in every day for great recommendations and let out your holiday spirit.
We kick off the Road to Christmas with an instant classic from the King of Christmas Action, Shane Black. Tonight, This Guy’s watching. . .
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Shane Black is a national treasure. He was all the rage in the 80s and 90s, and then, like that, he disappears for like a decade. Apparently Hollywood just totally burnt him out with what they were doing to his scripts. But, it also gave him all the time he needed to come up with an absolute comedy masterpiece in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
“What, fuckhead? Badly’s an adverb. Who taught you grammar? Get out. Vanish.”
Meet Harry (Robert Downey Jr), a small-time crook who fumbles his way into an audition for a movie. He ends up in Hollywood for the whole shebang, screen tests, parties, detective lessons for his method. Enter Gay Perry (Val Kilmer). The unlikely pair end up witnessing a murder, and have to figure out the mystery, stay one step ahead of the bad guys, and try not to kill each other in the meantime. Classic setup. Brilliant execution.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is honestly This Guy’s favourite comedy of the last 20 years. Everything about it just works. Black’s dialogue and storytelling, with an unexpectedly brilliant cast, comes together for a terrific flick that pulls out every noir and action cliche and kicks it in the ass. And it also got RDJ’s back on track in time for him to become our lovable Iron Man. So, it’s the Christmas gift that’s kept on giving for over a decade now.
So, one week ’til Christmas, and tonight This Guy’s watching Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Check in tomorrow for another great recommendation.
