Crash Bandicoot

Lesser Known Facts of Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot is a video game franchise created by Andy Gavin and James Rubin during their time at Naughty Dog for Sony and Universal Interactive Studios in 1996. Since then the series has been through many platforms and gone through several developers. The base story of the game is set on the fictitious Wumpa Islands. The story follows Crash Bandicoot, a creation of the series antagonist Doctor Neo Cortex, and henchman Doctor Nitrus Brio. Crash aims to prevent the Doctors’ plans for world domination and rescue his girlfriend, Tawna. Tawna is a female Bandicoot also created by the two Doctors.

The first instalment in the series went to the first PlayStation, receiving very positive reviews from critics. They praised the game’s graphics and unique visual style. Crash Bandicoot went on to be named the 8th best-selling PlayStation game of all time. Last year a remastered version of the Crash series was released, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, for PS4.

This Girl has been a big fan of Crash since the 7th grade. She has decided to share with you some information she found about the series. If you’re a fan yourself, you may be aware of these facts, but This Girl loves sharing any info that seems lesser known. In the beginning before Crash was named Crash Bandicoot, the game was jokingly called Sonic’s Ass playing off the fact you are always seeing the view from behind the character through the game. Also before it was settled that Crash would be a Bandicoot, Rubin and Grant also joked around with the name Willy the Wombat. Clearly that name didn’t stick. The name Crash merely came from the simple fact the main character was always crashing into crates.

Tawna, Crash’s girlfriend, didn’t always look the way she ended up in the games. After the first game, Tawna was removed because Rubin and Grant were not happy with her forced redesign. The original design of Tawna actually led to a situation with the director of Universal Interactive because she was deemed “to sexy”. Reports stated Tawna was removed from the game because of how she was dressed. This reaction reached Universal’s president who then forced Naughty Dog to tone down Tawna’s design. Later, Universal’s director stated, “No video game will ever be successful because of a sexy woman ever again.” This Girl gave that a chuckle since the director clearly wasn’t aware of the success of the Tomb Raider series at the time.

It’s amazing what video games go through before they land in our homes.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is set to be released for the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows on June 29th!
