‘Overlord’ trailer – the next ‘Cloverfield’ adventure?

Enthusiasm for the so-called “Cloververse” has cooled a bit after the disappointing Netflix release of The Cloverfield Paradox. the absolutely ballsiest move by Netflix to announce the film’s immediate release during the Super Bowl was a crazy risky, but led to huge viewing numbers for the streaming service we all know and love. Unfortunately, reviews were not so kind, and people seemed a bit disappointed with the lackluster story, and lazy ties to the original film. Now, JJ Abrams is producing a new genre film, Overlord. This flick was originally theorized to be the next film in the ‘Cloververse,’ though Abrams has denied this recently. Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time Abrams has misled his audience ahead of a film (i.e. “Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Khan.”).

Overlord follows a group of American soldiers during WWII, dropped behind enemy lines ahead of D-Day. In a small village they mean to infiltrate, the soldiers find the Nazis conducting horrific experiments with supernatural forces. The results look intense, bloody, and overall quite intriguing. The first trailer was released, and can be seen below!

While the tone of the trailer is a bit all over the place, it’s not hard to guess how it might fit into the ‘Cloververse’ should Abrams’ denial turn out to be misdirection. After the huge hit of Cloverfield, and critical darling, 10 Cloverfield Lane, it would be unfortunate if one ho-hum entry derails the entire anthology.

So, what say you readers? Is this flick obviously the next Cloverfield adventure? Has Abrams just enver moved on from his Lost habit of denying all clues revealing the story’s rue directions? Or maybe it’s just a standalone Nazi zombie flick. Either way, plenty of reason to get hyped!

Overlord is set to release November 9th of this year. Let us know your thoughts below or on Twitter @This_Guy_Writes!
