With the release of Split, M Night Shyamalan found himself in moviegoers’ good graces for the first time in almost fifteen years. This sleeper hit was the story of Kevin, (James McAvoy) and his journey into his psychosis, leading to the birth of a new personality with superhuman abilities. A shocking cameo at the end from Bruce Willis (as David Dunn), placed the film in the same universe as Shyamalan’s earlier superhuman tale, Unbreakable. Now, we’re told that a followup, Glass, which will further tie the films together, and hopefully successfully pull off the first ever ORIGINAL superhero shared cinematic universe. With the supposed release of Glass just a few months away, here is what we know so far about what is likely to be Shyamalan’s most anticipated film ever!
Anya Taylor-Joy’s Casey will return
Casey, the only survivor of Kevin’s (aka The Horde) original rampage from Split, is set to return for Glass. In Split, Casey escaped from her cell while Kevin transformed into The Beast and cannibalized her fellow kidnap victims. Casey, armed with a shotgun, managed to wound The Beast, but he still had her cornered and at his mercy. She was spared when he noticed the scars signalling her history of abuse and self-harm, marking her as “broken,” and therefore “pure.” The substance of her role in the new film is unknown a this time, but as a survivor of The Horde’s wrath, it’s possible David Dunn will seek her out in his pursuit of the villain.
Mr. Glass will have a secret pertaining to both David and Kevin
At the end of Unbreakable Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) was said to have been committed to an institution for the criminally insane, for his role in causing multiple disasters in his search for the “unbreakable man.” We do know he will return for the new film, named for his alter ego, Mr. Glass. Whether Elijah will escape or be released during the course of the film is unknown, but he will play be a major player, presumably having played a pivotal role in not just Dunn’s discovery of his powers, but Kevin’s history as well. The common theory is that the connecting factor is the Eastrail #177 train crash. In this crash, where Dunn was the sole survivor, he discovered his powers. Kevin’s father is said to have “left on a train,” leaving him alone with his mother. And Kevin undergoes his first transformation into The Beast at a train station. It is possible the Kevin’s father died in the same crash Dunn survived, setting off Kevin’s original psychosis.
David Dunn’s son is returning
Spencer Treat Clark, who played Dunn’s young son in Unbreakable is set to return as well. In the first film, Clark’s character Joseph believed in his father’s extraordinary abilities right from the start, even attempting to shoot Dunn to prove he was invulnerable. It’s worth noting that Robin Wright, Dunn’s wife from Unbreakable, has not been announced to return. Wright is of course the lead on Netflix’s House Of Cards, so this may be a simple scheduling conflict.
Sarah Paulson is a psychiatrist for “supers”
Paulson, of American Horror Story fame, is set to co-star in the film as Dr. Ellie Staple, a psychiatrist specializing in patients suffering from delusions of superhuman abilities. This will likely tie her to Elijah/Mr. Glass, who was sent to an asylum for the criminally insane at the end of Unbreakable. Though Glass’s poster (at the bottom of his article) shows David Dunn in an asylum setting as well, in chains. So it’s possible he himself will also come under treatment as well. As we saw in Split, Kevin/The Horde killed his psychiatrist when he first transformed into The Beast. With all three films presumably taking place in Philadelphia, it is possible Dr. Staple could be an associate or colleague of Kevin’s doctor.

Shyamalan and Willis on the set of Glass.
Disney had to be involved to make the movie happen
In order to accomplish David Dunn’s surprise cameo at the end of Split, Shyamalan had to ask permission from Disney, which had produced Unbreakable, to borrow the character. A simple deal was struck, with Disney promised to be involved in any developments of a possible sequel. Walt Disney Studios will be distributing Glass internationally, while Universal will handle North America.
Tentative release of Jan 18, 2019
As of right now. Universal and Disney are shooting for a January release, normally a dumping ground for unproven risky flicks. But with the huge success of Split, and the widespread excitement of the return of Unbreakable‘s David Dunn and Elijah Price, Glass has a real chance of being the first sleeper hit of the 2019.
