GLOW season 2

‘GLOW’ season 2 – Makes you miss kayfabe

As a childhood wrestling fan, who recently got back into these last couple years, seeing Netflix produce a show about the original women’s wrestling classic is just tops. This Guy grew up in the age of Lita, Trish Stratus, and Chyna. So, to be able to go back and see a story based on the women who inspired who inspired those superstars is a real joy. GLOW is back for its second season, showcasing some terrific characters, peppered with nostalgia. It also happens to be the best comedy on Netflix, while also exploring themes more relevant today then ever before.

GLOW‘s second season finds our gorgeous wrestling ladies building on their original pilot episode, and getting ready to film a full 20-week season for the local network. Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) are still trying to work through their troubled friendship, while Sam (Marc Maron) adjusts to being a father to Justine (Britt Baron). The rest of the cast returns as well of course, and we get to see some new feuds and newer moves from our fledgling sports entertainers.

GLOW season 2

What really makes GLOW special is its ability to mesh the hilarity with some really poignant dramatic stories. Between all the laughs and body slams, Ruth and Debbie’s crumbling friendship is still at the forefront, with the pain between them feeling raw and real. Bash (Chris Lowell) also deals with some heavy news in his personal life that leads to some heartbreaking developments as the season rolls on. Even Kia Stevens (known for her career in WWE as Kharma) shows some real acting chops, which few major wrestling stars have managed to capture.

There isn’t much hype needed here. GLOW is a fantastic show to get into, whether you’re a hardcore wrestling fan or not. It’s funny, touching, and tells a story that anyone who’s ever tried to chase their dreams can relate to.

Also, for those of you interested in the absolutely true story of GLOW: The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, Netflix also has a terrific documentary available as well. Well worth a watch.

This Guy

Who likes movies? This Guy! Who has way too much to say, and lacks the mental focus, or appropriate filters necessary to express himself in an acceptable fashion? This guy! Oh, and something about two thumbs.
