John Dies At The End

This Guy’s Watching: ‘John Dies At The End’

As heart-poundingly scary, spooky, and terrifying as Halloween can be, tis quite a silly season. Skeletons and pumpkin smashing, stale candy, and people dressed up like dead celebrities. It’s an odd time of year. So, it’s also a good time to celebrate the lighter side of nightmares and terrors.

This is the point in the This Guy’s yearly ritual where he stops trying to scare the piss out of himself. Today is the day to relax, kick back, and enjoy something off the wall and just outright entertaining. So, if you’re still following along with our series, join This Guy and set aside a couple hours to watch. . .

Don Coscarelli’s John Dies At The End

John Dies At The End opens with a familiar riddle

Now, This Guy knows what you’re thinking: “You just gave away the end of the movie!” Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that. John Dies At The End isn’t really your typical hero’s tale, with your typical heroes, and typical endings. Dave and John, and all their friends, enemies, and monstrous acquaintances; have a lot more to worry about than just life and death.

“I once saw a man’s kidney grow tentacles, tear itself out of a ragged hole in his back, and go slapping across my kitchen floor. But that’s another story. “

John Dies At the End finds lazy stoners, David and John, caught up in a multi-dimensional, totally not cool crisis brought on by some bad soy sauce. After trying a new drug from a fake Jamaican at a party, Dave and John find themselves experiencing some pretty impossible happenings, and coming face to face with a few otherworldly abominations. It’s gonna take as much focus as the two buddies can muster, a few shotguns, flamethrowers, and maybe a phone call to a TV exorcist in order to ride out this bad trip, and save their world from inter-dimensional subjugation. It’s HP Lovecraft meets Bill & Ted.

The movie is a great romp for around Halloween season. It’s weird, and offbeat, with a few doses of cosmic horror and sci-fi. if you like the weird and surreal, John Dies At The End is for you. And if you enjoy it, This Guy can’t recommend the book (by David Wong) enough.

So, 3 days to Halloween. Too late to turn back now. This Guy’s watching John Dies At the End, and you should too!
