S. Craig Zahler’s Bone Tomahawk

Bone Tomahawk came out of absolutely nowhere and hit This Guy like a hatchet repeatedly to the groin. With an actual marketing campaign this could’ve been an hit an an instant classic. It’s at once both a terrific, slow-burn western, and a tense, bone-chilling horror. And it has the most random, but surprisingly awesome cast assembled for a genre crossover: Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins.

“Pain is how your body talks to you. You’d do well to listen to it.”

Bone Tomahawk finds a quiet little frontier town suddenly beset by an unthinkable horror. The town nurse, and a Sheriff’s deputy are abducted. The Sheriff (Russell) determines the culprits to be a clan of savage cave-dwellers. These men are vicious, but expert killers, and nearly perfect predators. Together with the nurse’s husband, his remaining deputy, and a local gunslinger, the Sheriff marches west to find the troglodytes’ home, and recover their missing townsfolk.

The story is a simple rescue. But it’s told so well, the acting is incredible, and the villains are so fucking scary it’s just unbelievable. It also contains probably the most sudden and brutal bit of violence ever put to film. Seriously, it sticks with you. Bone Tomahawk is not an easy film to watch, but it’s an absolute gem, and worth a watch for horror and western fans alike.
