This Chick’s Top 5 Netflix Original Series

This Chick is somewhat of a homebody. Ask me out on a Saturday? Hell no! Netflix is calling. I can’t tell you exactly when Netflix became my all-day-every-day, but I can tell you this; I am super hyped about Netflix pumping out so many originals. From sci-fi to FBI, they have it all, and the awards to prove it. Their amazing Netflix original series have created some pretty intense super fans, like me, so PLEASE keep them coming! Today let’s go through This Chick’s favourites that Netflix has to offer.

Stranger Things – Lovers in a dangerous dimension

Netflix Original stranger things

As a huge sci-fi fan, Stranger Things is everything I could have asked for. It’s somehow able to incorporate everything you need to make a successful story for adults, but relying completely on children. No easy task for any story; we’ve all seen many failed attempts at bringing “cool” kids to TV, but unfortunately, people seem to really hate kids. Yet despite all of that, Stranger Things rises up, and brings us the most badass kids on TV. This series really excels at making every episode important, without filler.

The nicest thing for This Chick about this series is despite a couple low points in season 2 , it still finishes strong and leaves us wanting more. The series has a very clear plot and when you look back at the first episode in season one, it still matches up with the last episode in season 2, and that, my friends, is just great writing and vision. So dive in. Stranger Things follows Eleven’s journey of self-discovery and badassery in a world filled with monsters and personal demons.

Mindhunter – Glamorous Summer of ’77

netflix original mindhunter

I never thought I would like Mindhunter. I will be honest, cop shows are just not my thing. Throw a comedy on, a horror, or an action show I am all in, goodbye productive weekend! I’m just weary of the NCIS’s and Law & Order’s of the world. But this was different. It was new, enthralling, and REAL. This Netflix Original follows the actual (dramatized) story of how the FBI created the term and profiling of serial killers. How sick is that, right?

Add in some great writing and a splash of solid acting and you have a Netflix Original that can really be special. It’s got it all: great dialogue, suspense that makes you literally cover your eyes (if This Chick is being honest), and good old fashion stick-it-to-the-man themes! So forget the old washed up cop shows that litter your cable. THIS IS new. THIS IS refreshing. This Chick cannot wait to see Holden, Bill, and Wendy blur the lines of right and wrong while making one of the biggest behavioural science contributions of our time. . . while of course pissing off the boss! Hurry up season 2!

Jessica Jones – New York’s muscle

netflix original jessica jones

This series has everything I need to have a saisfying weekend binge. Let’s be honest here, most of the great superhero movies and shows star a strong guy, an all-American who you could bring home to your mom. Well, for This Chick, even that gets old. Enter Jessica Jones. Jessica doesn’t give a shit about your mother, your problems, or what you need. She’s in it for herself and as a “hero” that is pretty damn refreshing to me. Netflix has gifted us with a great season (with a second on the way). And I still want MORE!

Jessica Jones really does have it all for a superhero show. But it does one thing really different. It can make you forget Jessica is supposed to be the good guy. Not everyone can be the Superman of the group and let’s be honest here, most of us are not, and all of us would get tired of being perfect at some point. This show brings us back to the reality of trying, no, HAVING to be a “hero” in an overpopulated city full of cynics, thugs, and, you know, New Yorkers.

GLOW – The money’s in the chase

netflix original GLOW

This Chick is a pretty serious WWE fan (shhh!) so when we were promised a Netflix Original about the beginnings of women’s wrestling, I was more than intrigued. As a fan of good old sports entertainment (that to this day is predominantly about male wrestles, where still they outnumber women four to one) I was curious about how it all began. Enter the “Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling,” a dramatic comedic retelling of how it all began, and it’s a pretty damn good story! GLOW focuses on the the first fourteen women to grace us with their talent in the ring on their own show.

This dives in and delivers a bionic elbow to what was considered feminine and correct for women in the 80’s. Paired with great writing and a stellar cast, GLOW creates a world of glitter, leotards and good old fashion wrestling! When these women are faced with public outrage they kick those people in the teeth with there newly muscled legs and carry on! These early divas are not to be messed with! This creation I am sure ignited a new generation of WWE fans and made the fire even hotter for the rest of us. This Chick learned one thing for certain, don’t mess with wrestlers and don’t mess with wrestlers’ husbands.

Big Mouth – The joys of puberty

Netflix original Big Mouth

Welcome to puberty, where everyone wishes for a quick death but instead gets life without parole. Big Mouth is a ridiculous story of four middle-schoolers struggling through the ups and almost constant downs of growing pains. I’d love to have been in the room when this concept was pitched and when the animators created the puberty monsters. This show is a damn near literal retelling of all our lives during puberty, allowing us to remember those awful times while laughing and pretending to be nostalgic! This Netflix original is incredible and so much better than it ever had to be. Nick, Andrew, Missy, and Jay lead the show with their angry puberty guardians (The Hormone Monsters) Maurice and Connie as they deal with the madness inside them.

One of the best things about this series is its ability to laugh at itself as well as its own audience for the many things boys and girls the world over do during puberty. Now throw away the filter for vulgarity and obscenities, and you have Big Mouth. This show hits the mark on comedic timing and never loses a step from the writers. With powerhouse comedians behind this terrific series, This Chick can’t wait for this Netflix original to come back and hopefully continue into Big Mouth: The High School Years.

This Chick

This Chick's got enough on her plate: Making enemies, staying classy, walking the walk, and keeping This Guy honest (whenever possible). But for you, she'll make time to keep you up to speed on what's cool and what blows.
